If you grew up in Finland, you know exactly what “American Dip Mix” means. It’s that reddish, slightly sweet, gently spicy powder you stir into sour cream and traditionally serve with a big bowl of potato chips. Brands like Estrella and Taffel turned it into a national snack-table classic.
Why is it called American? Not because it’s some treasured heirloom from a Texas ranch. Most likely, it’s a Nordic interpretation of bold “American-style” flavors — tomato, onion, garlic, a hint of heat — the kind of seasoning profile that was marketed as exotic and exciting back in the day. In other words, it’s Finland’s idea of America in dip form. And honestly? It works.
Now, before anyone says, “Another dip mix?” — yes. And I’m not apologizing. As I mentioned last week, high-quality homemade seasoning mixes are invaluable. They’re one of the easiest and smartest ways to add serious flavor to almost any food. A handful of clean spices can completely transform a bowl of sour cream into something people hover around. Plus, you can use the dip mixes in dozens of different ways. Check my tips at the end of the post.
As you can guess, the problem with the store-bought dip mix versions is that, once again, they contain dubious stuff like maltodextrin, sugar, starches, anti-caking agents, and ample monosodium glutamate. Well, the flavor can be nostalgic, but the ingredients certainly are directly from modern labs and factories.
So, I made my own. Tomato powder, onion powder, garlic powder, freshly ground black pepper, and just a tiny pinch of cayenne. All organic. That’s it. Clean, natural, and fully keto-friendly without added empty carbs.
And no, I’m not serving my precious dip with vile potato chips. Around here, it’s paired with puffed cheese, pepperoni chips, and pork rinds — which you’ll spot in the main photo above. Same iconic flavor, zero junk.
Just like the Sour Cream and Onion version, this one is also joining my Ellin keittiö lineup as a ready-made pouch — because sometimes you want to measure, and sometimes you just want to tear, stir, and dip.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Before you begin, you might want to check the FAQ section of my Sour Cream and Onion Dip Mix post. Many of the same tips (especially about spice texture and storage) apply to this American Dip Mix as well.
But, let’s get started with our dip mix.
Measure out 2 tablespoons of organic tomato powder, 2 teaspoons of organic onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon of organic garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground organic black pepper, and 1/16 teaspoon of organic cayenne pepper.

Place all the spices into a small container with a tight-fitting lid.

Close the lid securely.

Shake vigorously until the spices are evenly combined and the color is uniform.

Your dip mix is ready to use. Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, or mix it immediately.

To make the dip, stir 1–2 teaspoons of the mix into 1 cup (240 ml) sour cream.

Add unrefined sea salt to taste.

Mix well.

Let it sit for about 30 minutes in the refrigerator for the best flavor.

Serve with your chosen keto-friendly or carnivore-friendly dippers, and watch it disappear.

Yum!

Here’s the recipe for you to enjoy:

How to Use This Dip Mix
Like my last week’s Sour Cream and Onion Dip Mix, this blend is perfect as is, so no variations here either. Instead, here are my favorite ways to use this bold, tomato-based seasoning — in addition to the classic dip with sour cream.
1. Mix with Tallow or Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (and Use as a Rub)
Stir the seasoning into melted tallow or high-quality extra-virgin olive oil. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to bloom.
Rub it generously over veggies, steak, chicken thighs, or pork chops before cooking. The fat helps the tomato and spices adhere beautifully, prevents the tomato from burning, and emphasizes the fruity tomato flavor.
2. Butter Drizzle for Meat or Vegetables
Mix the seasoning into melted butter, let it sit briefly, and drizzle over:
– Grilled steak
– Oven-roasted vegetables
– Burger patties
– Chicken wings
– Grilled halloumi
It instantly creates a tasty, savory finish with zero effort.
3. Compound Butter
Mix 2 tablespoons of the seasoning with 8 oz (230 g) softened salted grass-fed butter until fully combined.
Shape into a log using plastic foil and refrigerate until firm. Slice and place on hot steak, burgers, roasted vegetables, or chicken. Let it melt slowly over the top. This American Dip Mix makes a particularly delicious compound butter, highly recommended!
4. Flavor Boost for Ground Meat
Add 1 tablespoon directly into 1 lb (450 g) of ground beef before forming patties or meatballs. It distributes evenly and gives a subtle tomato-onion flavor without any sauce.
5. Stir into Cream Cheese
Mix 2 teaspoons of the seasoning into 8 oz (230 g) of softened cream cheese for a thicker, spreadable dip or filling. Great for stuffing mini peppers or spreading on keto or carnivore bread.
This blend especially shines when paired with quality fats, as they round out the tomato and carry the spices evenly, creating the right flavor without any junk ingredients. The fat also prevents the tomato from burning during cooking.
Closing Thoughts
If you ever want to taste one of the most iconic Finnish dip flavors, make this American Dip Mix — and you’ll immediately understand why we Finns are so incredibly addicted to it. That familiar tomato-onion-garlic combo, gently spicy and perfectly balanced, is pure nostalgia in your mouth.
Like my Sour Cream and Onion Dip Mix, this one will be joining the lineup in my Finnish clean keto and carnivore online store, Ellin keittiö, most likely next month. I just yesterday launched my first herb– and garlic-infused grass-fed gourmet tallow products (finally!), so the dip mixes are next in line — ready for the First of May celebrations (which we Finns take very seriously!)
